What You Need To Know About Domain Registrars In Zimbabwe

domain registrars in zimbabwe

There are countless articles online discussing about the benefits of taking your business or brand online, this isn’t going to be one of those articles but rather I am going to explain to you the process of registering a local domain in Zimbabwe. Registering a domain name is actually the 2nd stage in a Website project. Below are the main stages in getting your online presence in the modern age through a website, ecommerce site or blog.

Five Stages To Follow When Pursuing a Website Project

  1. Establish Its Purpose
  2. Register a Domain Name
  3. Purchase Web Hosting
  4. Decide on a CMS (Content Management System)
  5. Develop Your Content

For those who have never created a website the stages above sound a bit overwhelming. This article is about registration of domains so stage number 2 will be fully explained. As for now will try and explain stage 1 (establish website purpose).

     1. Establish Website Purpose

With any project one needs to establish what they want to do and the deliverables within that particular project. You will need to determine whether your website is just going to give more information to potential clients on your current services and credentials or it will have informative articles and pages. There is also need to determine whether your website is going to have blog posts and engage with your community/customer base as part of your social media campaigns.

     2. Register a Domain Name

After establishing your website purpose, you now need to then register a domain. A domain name is a sequence of letters and/or numbers/hyphens separated by one or more periods (“.”) that act as a pointer to a unique numerical address (IP) on a computer network such as the Internet. There are different types of domains active on the Internet

  • TLD – Top Level Domains – these are the highest level in the DNS (Domain Name System) structure of the internet.
  • ccTLD – country code Top Level Domains – these are two letter domain established for geographical locations e.g. .uk for England, .au for Australia, .za for South Africa. These country level domains are registered mainly by residents of a country and these are the ones that Design@7 Visual Works is a registrar of.
  • gTLD – generic Top Level Domains – The best known generic TLD include .com, .net. org, .biz. These can be registered by anyone in the world.

There are more types of domains but will not talk about those in this article, my focus is on local level domains for Zimbabwe and the generic ones to a lesser extent.

Zimbabwe Local Domains

It’s advised for a locally run business to register a local domain as they prepare to go into the online web space. This increases your credibility with your local customer base, your search engine optimisation (SEO) is also enhanced by using a local level domain.

Examples of local domains are herald.co.zw, cut.ac.zw, Imbisa.org.zw, State.gov.zw. When Design@7 Visual Works decided to get an online presence we registered Designat7.com, Designat7.net, Designat7.co.za and Designat7.co.zw. We followed this path because we are providing services that are global and we have clients in South Africa, Zambia, UK, Australia and Zimbabwe as well. One would ask what benefits does having all these handles registered, it’s mainly an issue of safe-guarding our brand name and also when one goes on any of those URLs they are redirected to our site.

Registering a local domain in Zimbabwe has been made easy by strides of local start-ups like name.co.zw and other companies making efforts to streamline the hustle. Basically when you require to register a domain you are supposed to approach one of the listed domain registrars in Zimbabwe, an example of such registrars are Design@7 Visual Works, Web Enchanter, WebDev amongst others. ZISPA stipulates that when one is to register a local domain they need to provide a few details. These details are kept safe and never disclosed to any external party without your consent. When registering a local domain ZISPA stipulates that you need to be a local citizen, if you are foreigner the requirements are a bit different, get in touch with us for such. If you still recall the stages in creating a website above, number 3 was Purchase Web Hosting. Web hosting is where your website files, images, videos, documents will reside on. These files will be accessed through your newly purchased domain.

Will soon publish a whole new article on making a good choice for web hosting.
